For better or worse, the past is all too present in Lebanon. Lebanon’s living history all too often imposes itself on the present. Oral history offers an alternative approach to history that puts power into the hands of the people who have lived it, telling history from the bottom up. The recording of voices and the collection of testimonies of multiple perspectives reflecting the contested historical events that Lebanon has witnessed is crucial to reclaiming history. The transformation of these testimonies, shaping time, memory and history, into accessible personal stories helps connect us to our own history, and is an important step in the process of bringing history to life. Multi-media journalism is a powerful tool to convey multiple narratives, perspective and ideas to a wider audience. It can transcend boundaries and facilitate a dialogue between the personal stories, the audience and history.

forumZFD and MASMF invite you to join us on a journey with Oral Historian Maria Abunnasr and media journalist Alejandro Gomez-Meade to explore how to work with the past through the power of oral history and contemporary media. On this journey, we will learn how to transform personal stories through oral history and four contemporary media:photography, video, audio and data visualisation. . This workshop is intended for those interested in listening to and learning from the collection of testimonies that reflect the contested nature of history in Lebanon, and who have a desire to share these stories further afield using a diverse array of multimedia methods.

Over the course of three weeks, on Monday and Thursday evenings, we offer a series of six workshop sessions to provide those interested in or already working in the field with the necessary skills and resources to communicate their work in visual and audible form.
